Computer wont restart after changing virtual memory again?

hi all

hope someone can help me with this, some time ago i got advice from someone on how to change virtual memory. i was given steps on how to do it, my computer then properties then advance then click on settings etc he told me to put in 5000 twice in the boxes then click set but he also told me to go into environment variables and added somthing there in 2 boxes and also run prefetch or somthing like that then deleted what came up in window

the computer restarted and was suprised how quite my computer fan became, aint been able to contact him since. he worked for some software company so trusted he knew what he was saying. but anyway ive reinstalled windows couples times and just done what seen on here and other sites and just clicked on set tab after entered 4095 again in custom boxes but computer doesnt ask to restart

is it because its been done before already and all need to do is enter 4095 again cause it goes back to default value when ive reinstalled, ive check back and it has changed to 4095 but computer dont seem as quite when 1st done it

im running xp media center p4, 2 gb ram , 3.06 ghz

thanks ahead for any help with thisComputer wont restart after changing virtual memory again?
If you just clicked OK sometimes it doesn't actually set it. If you click apply and it doesn't ask you to restart than it should be good.

What you are actually doing is reserving 4095MB of space on your hard drive for programs to store information when they are running. This happens when when it cannot be totally loaded into the RAM.

So the more space you give it the better in certain circumstances. It is always better to upgrade your RAM than give more Virtual memory.
