How to change virtual memory / kernal page files?

I seem to not have much room for virtual memory even though not much is running. Is there a way to make more space for the OS memory? I cant even run yahoo messenger and open a page or two without the system bogging down. I am using windows XP on a HP pavillion that has been recently reformatted. How to change virtual memory / kernal page files?
right click my computer to get the properties

click on the advanced tab

click the settings under the performance

click the advance tab

click change under the virtual memory

click on the custom size and increase it to 1024 to 2048

and click the set tab and press ok. the system will reboot.

and you wont have the problem again.
