What's the difference between Initial size and Maximum size?

I want to change virtual memory of my computer, but I got confused when I asked how to change virtual memory.What's the difference between Initial size and Maximum size?
Since you dont know what you are doing, it is best to let windows manage the virtual memory. This is the case unless you are very limited in resourses.
