I'm trying to use old software on Windows XP Pro, but it says 'Windows must have at Least 3Meg Virtual Memory';

I've checked the control panel//system//advanced//performance menus, and tried ensuring there is a file on each disk, of several hundred megs, but in every case it is still asking for 3Meg of Virtual Memory.

I've also tried changing the compatibility modes for the software, and telling it to run in Windows 95 compatibility mode (it's native operating system is, I believe, 3.11).

Every time I get this silly error message.

It's an original CD, should work fine, and my daughter is desperate to be able to play this game, since it ran fine on XP on my brother's PC. Unfortunately, he doesn't know how he got it working.

My OS is otherwise fine, fully uptodate etc., and I know my PC generally, so I'm expecting to find there's a fix that involves tweaking the autoexec.bat or config.sys, but I can't find it in Google.

HELP, PLEASE!!I'm trying to use old software on Windows XP Pro, but it says 'Windows must have at Least 3Meg Virtual Memory';
I faced a similar problem to this when loading old software, but in relation to available disk space...

What's happening is the software interrogates your PC to see if there is enough virtual memory or disk space but truncates the number it retrieves.

You might have 3001 Mb of virtual memory but the software never expected such a monstrous amount! It loses the first (or more) digit(s) and sees 001 Mb...

Tweak your virtual memory settings just a fraction - up or down (in this example to 2999 Mb - 4001Mb would not do it!).

The software should load no problem.

It may check again when it actually runs, so you ay need to leave it tweaked.

Good Luck!I'm trying to use old software on Windows XP Pro, but it says 'Windows must have at Least 3Meg Virtual Memory';
Is your pc beefy enough for the program?
Virtual Memory, as in memory available.

Virtual memory is a term to mean how much room your using RAM wise. RAM is short for (random access memory), how much room your computer can access at one time per second. If your virtual memory is low, you need to do some basic cleaning on your computer. Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, a registry cleaner would greatly help, maybe a restart afterwards.

If you need any help, lemme know.

right click on your desktop and go to propertys... then click view and click windows 95... thats what i did with a window 98 game and it worked.. then when your done just go to view windows xp again.
It's telling you that you don't have enough space to operate that particular game within the parameters of the space it requires. If you go back and uninstall the program, it will tell you how much space it is using and how much it will free up.

That alone should give you the information you need to free up more space in that particular area.

Uninstall all programs that are not currently in use, as well.

When you go into the tools section, there is a component that allows you to see programs that you use more frequently than others. It will tell you when you used it last, how often it is used and, more importantly, how much space it is taking up.

I hope this helps, good luck, Rick
Usually that messages pops on because there are to many programs running at the same time, and there is not enough virtual memory, even if it says you do. check in you bottom right corner in the task bar and close all the programs.... ALL OF THEM!... Also the game might not be compatible with Windows XP, even with the compatibility software, it might not necessary work.
Change your Virtual Memory! Go to the Start Button (The Green one - Lower Left Corner on your desktop). Scroll up to ';My Computer'; and RIGHT-click on it. Scroll down the menu that shows up to ';Properties'; and choose that. Once the ';Properties'; window opens, choose the ';Advanced'; Tab at the top, and the top button will allow you to change the amount of virtual memory. Follow the instructions. May I also suggest that you SET a restore point before you try tweaking the virtual memory?
I would definately do some fall cleaning on your pc.

Check your Add/Remove programs, for things that you DONT NEED.

Remove them.

Defragment ( start%26gt;accessories%26gt;systemtools%26gt; disk defrag)

This re-organizes your system freeing up more space.

Check your ';PROGRAM FILES'; in C: .... if there are things you dont use also remove those folders.

Check what your start up menu contains.

Your computer maybe commanded to start all kinds of applications and updates in the backround, making it difficult to execute another bigger program.

I am not shure how to get there other than thru my AVG/Ewido.They have a tab that you can see what starts.. I had quicktime, yahoo, yahoo updates, adobe updates, msn messenger and someother thing that said quiet on it.

Basically remove anything that doesnt NEED to start when you turn it on. I dont need anyof those things , I can CHOOSE to use or update at my descetion.

Hope it helps.
